1000 parking bays - BPA 2023 Finalist

Creating a sustainable solution to the issue of overwhelmed hospital parking, Adanac Park and Ride which is located just off the M27 provides staff at Southampton General Hospital the provision to park away from the main hospital site and be transported into work via a dedicated bus service. By alleviating the parking congestion at the hospital, this facility directly improves the parking experience for both staff and patients. In addition, Adanac Park and Ride is open to the public on weekends with public transport links into the town centre, supporting the ease of traffic in and around Southampton.

The MSPC consists of 1000 car parking bays over five levels including a number of accessible parking bays. It contains three stair cores, one of which is serviced by two 8 person lifts and a large canopy covered waiting area for those waiting for a transport link. There is also a secure bicycle hub with a two-tier racking system to utilise the available space. The car park also incorporates fifteen electric car charging stations, with the capacity to increase this number in the future.

Also integrated in this facility is a modern parking office with welfare facilities consisting of a reception area, two toilets (one accessible) and a kitchenette. Three substations are also contained within the car park which power the carpark and will provide power to the future health care developments on the plot. Additional features of this car park include a linear heat fire detection system, a cloud-based parking management system with controlled access and pay meters and CCTV cameras throughout which can be monitored locally and centrally. All these elements contribute to the safety and security of the facility.

The design of the building required careful consideration to the environment due to it being positioned alongside a main arterial road and surrounded by a mix of industrial and residential buildings. Meticulous planning was therefore given to the landscaping works with a selection of newly planted trees, wildflowers and native plants which sought to compliment the modernist backlit architectural façade of the car park.

Adanac Car Park has been listed as a finalist in the British Parking Awards 2023 in the Best New Car Park category.
