Designing a Sustainable and User-Friendly Mobility Hub in Stevenage

When entrusted with the task of creating this project alongside Fatkin, we wholeheartedly embraced the challenge of fulfilling Stevenage Borough Council’s vision. Our goal was to design a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing mobility hub that would be embraced by the community. We are proud to have delivered a landmark building for Stevenage, one that both our client and the town can take pride in.

The Mobility Hub, situated near the railway station, caters to both visitors and commuters. Its design captures all the advantages of a mobility hub, providing 622 parking spaces, secure bicycle storage for 80 bikes, and 27 spaces for motorcycles. The user-friendly car park features a ticketless system with ANPR, dynamic counting for available spaces, and remote-controlled CCTV for safety.

Environmental considerations were prioritized, with 30 active EVCs and provisions for 126 more. Smart load balancing and PV panels help reduce peak power demands, making the car park energy-efficient. Minimal waste design and absence of a heating system earned the car park an A in its Life Cycle Assessment benchmark rating.

The car park’s façade is thoughtfully designed with perforated steel cladding showcasing images of Stevenage’s achievements. The colors and materials acknowledge the town’s heritage as a New Town and were selected in collaboration with the local planning team.

Each floor of the car park is coated in a different color, creating a captivating rainbow light-show at night. The efficient Huber lighting system uses motion and light sensors for energy efficiency and provides gentle background lighting during quiet periods.

The Mobility Hub has recently achieved prestigious certifications, including Park Mark Plus and Disabled Parking Accreditation, making it the first in Hertfordshire to do so. We eagerly anticipate celebrating this success with our client and the community at the forthcoming certification ceremony.

In addition, the car park has won the British Parking Awards 2023 in the ‘Best New Car Park’ category.
